Rockville, MD (JK) – Montgomery County has completed an agreement to acquire the Maryland-side property and ferry business assets at historic White’s Ferry, marking a significant step toward restoring service across the Potomac River.
Under the agreement, the county will purchase approximately 2.5 acres at 24801 White’s Ferry Road in Dickerson for $1.5 million. The property includes the ferry landing, store, boat launch, storage buildings and other improvements.
Owners Chuck and Stacy Kuhn have agreed to donate the ferry boats, equipment and other business assets-valued at more than $7 million-to Montgomery County at no cost.
Despite the acquisition, ferry service will not resume immediately. The ferry has been out of operation since December 2020 because of a legal dispute over landing rights on the Virginia side of the Potomac River in Loudoun County. County officials say restoring those landing rights remains the final major hurdle before service can restart.
Once Montgomery County takes possession, the ferry vessels will be removed from the river, inspected and repaired so they will be ready for service if an agreement is reached in Virginia.
White’s Ferry, established in 1786, carried nearly 800 vehicles a day before it closed and served as an important transportation link between Montgomery County and Loudoun County.
