A second rabid beaver has been confirmed at Cunningham Falls State Park in less than two weeks.
The Frederick County Health Department says a beaver collected after a 19-year-old man was attacked while fishing on August 5 at Hunting Creek Lake in the William Houck Area tested positive for rabies. The latest case follows a July 26 attack in which a 13-year-old swimmer was bitten by a rabid beaver. As a precaution, the William Houck day-use area, boat ramp and Big Hunting Creek above the lake have been closed while officials determine the area is safe for visitors.
The closures are expected to remain in place for several days. Anyone bitten or scratched by a beaver near Cunningham Falls State Park is urged to contact a health care provider and the Frederick County Health Department.
