Baltimore, MD (JK) – Maryland has recorded 50 heat-related deaths since May, making 2026 the deadliest heat season on record, according to the Maryland Department of Health.
Locally, Montgomery County has reported eight heat-related deaths, while Frederick County has recorded two and Washington County one.
Forty-three of the statewide deaths occurred in July. The state has also reported about 1,300 emergency room and urgent care visits and roughly 1,260 EMS calls for heat-related illnesses.
Older adults are particularly vulnerable, accounting for 62% of the deaths.
Health officials urge residents to stay hydrated, avoid prolonged heat exposure and check on elderly neighbors and others who may be vulnerable. Cooling centers are available through local health departments, and residents can call 211 for information.
