Maryland wildlife officials are taking precautions after a 10-year-old girl was bitten by a beaver at Seneca Creek State Park, and a dead beaver found there days later tested positive for rabies.
Officials have not been able to determine whether that was the same animal that attacked the girl. About a mile of trail and river access near Berryville Road is now closed as wildlife teams search the area for other sick animals.
The development follows two separate beaver attacks at Cunningham Falls State Park in Frederick County. A 13-year-old boy was attacked while swimming, and a 19-year-old fisherman was also bitten. Both beavers tested positive for rabies.
The state says the Seneca Creek incident is not believed to be related, and there is no evidence of a broader rabies outbreak.
