Drivers using Route 15 in Frederick County can expect construction and traffic changes as the Maryland State Highway Administration begins a 10-point-4-million-dollar safety improvement project at Auburn Road and Angleberger Road.
The project will reconstruct the existing crossover and add a raised median designed to prevent side-street traffic from crossing both directions of Route 15 at the same time. Instead, drivers coming from Angleberger Road will turn right onto northbound Route 15 and use a new J-turn about three-thousand feet north of the intersection to access southbound Route 15.
New acceleration and deceleration lanes will also be built to accommodate U-turns. Officials say J-turns can significantly reduce the risk of right-angle crashes.
Construction will take place during daytime and overnight hours Monday through Friday. Drivers should expect occasional single-lane and shoulder closures. Crews will avoid certain peak commuter periods, including weekday afternoons on northbound Route 15 and weekday mornings on southbound Route 15.
