A Martinsburg man is facing charges after deputies say he disrupted Sunday church services in Falling Waters.
The Berkeley County Sheriff’s Office responded around 8:40 Sunday morning to Marlowe Assembly of God on Williamsport Pike. Deputies were told a neighboring resident was yelling profanities and making threats toward church staff and congregants, and had fired a gun.
Deputy Robinson determined the man had actually been setting off fireworks and firecrackers, not firing a weapon. Investigators say 39-year-old David Bates was angry with the church over what he believed was interference with his hunting activities.
Bates refused to provide identification and was arrested for obstruction and disruption of church services. He was taken to Eastern Regional Jail.
