They say both incidents required precise judgment, a coordinated effort and strong communication.
Frederick, Md (KM) A woman who was known to have four open arrest warrants was taken into custody last weekend. Leslie Carol Lafors, 71, is charged with disorderly conduct, obstructing and hindering, and two counts of failure to obey a lawful order.
Frederick Police say on Saturday, they were called to the area of Baker Place South for a disorderly person. They observed Lafors leaving in a vehicle to a parking lot on West Patrick Street. Authorities say she attempted to flee, navigating through a crowded parking lot. Police decided not to pursue Lafors due to the possible risks to the public.
Officers continued to maintain surveillance of Lafors, and safely apprehended her. .
She was taken to the Adult Detention Center where she is being held without bond.
Frederick Police say this arrest demonstrates the importance of restraint, patience and communications during a potentially volatile encounter. They say the decision by officers not to pursue prevented unnecessary risk to the public and led to a safe arrest.
In the second incident, a man who allegedly threatened an acquaintance was arrested over the weekend. Hubert Edward Smith, 49, is charged with 1st-degree assault, 2nd-degree assault, reckless endangerment, resisting arrest and carrying and concealing a dangerous weapon. He’s currently incarcerated at the Frederick County Adult Detention Center without bond.
Police on Sunday say an individual approached them asking for a welfare check on an acquaintance. That person said they were threatened by that acquittance. who had a hunting knife. The weapon was lunged toward the victim. .
Officers said it was credible; threat and were able locate Smith who still had the hunting knife described by the victim.. Authorities say Smith resisted and made threats against officers, but was taken into custody.
The Frederick Police say they recognize and thank the A Squad patrol officers, dispatchers and staff for their “professionalism and sound judgment” in both cases. Authorities says these two incidents “reflect the complex nature of law enforcement,” and how “teamwork, situational awareness and commitment to protect the community” can make a difference.
