Silver Spring Shooting Victim’s Death Ruled Homicide

More than three months after a shooting in Silver Spring, the victim has died and prosecutors are now considering upgraded charges.

Rockville, Md. (DG) – What began as an attempted murder case in Silver Spring is now being reviewed as a possible first-degree murder.

Montgomery County Police say 40-year-old Derrick Jones was shot around 1 p.m. on June 19, 2025 in the 30 block of Hunters Gate Court. When officers arrived, Jones was suffering from multiple gunshot wounds and was rushed to a nearby trauma center.

Investigators say Jones identified the shooter as his girlfriend’s 20-year-old son, Julian Rogers. A lookout was issued, and Rogers was quickly found and arrested nearby without resistance. Police recovered a privately manufactured 9-millimeter handgun with an extended magazine and a live round in the chamber.

On September 28,2025, detectives were notified that Jones had died while receiving care at a rehabilitation facility. The Medical Examiner ruled his death a homicide, and prosecutors are now reviewing whether to upgrade the charges.
