Damascus Man In Custody After Tense Standoff

A Damascus man is in custody after a tense standoff that stretched late into the night and early Tuesday morning.

Damascus, Md. (DG) – After hours of tense negotiations, a standoff in Damascus ended with a man taken into custody early Tuesday morning.

Sheriff’s deputies say they responded Monday evening to the 26000 block of Mullinix Road to serve multiple felony arrest warrants on 28-year-old Brandon Clayton. Authorities report Clayton barricaded himself inside the home and repeatedly threatened to set it on fire, at one point attempting to ignite items inside the residence.

Montgomery County Police SWAT officers and crisis negotiators were called in to assist. Clayton’s mother initially stayed inside the home but later left safely after negotiations. Clayton surrendered shortly afterward. The standoff lasted about five and a half hours, and Clayton is now being held at the Montgomery County Central Processing Unit awaiting a bond hearing.
