Police Arrest Man For Erratic Driving

He’s charged with 14 offenses so far.

One man is facing four criminal and ten traffic charges for driving erratically around Frederick on Saturday. James Lee Higgins, 43, of Berwyn Heights, Maryland was arrested at the parking lot of the Hillcrest Shopping center.

Police say Higgins tried to run away as officers approached, but was taken to the ground and handcuffed. Authorities say he refused to comply and tried to kick officers. He was secured and taken into custody.

Higgins was taken to Frederick Memorial Hospital as a precaution, and then to the Adult Detention Center.

Prior to Higgins’ arrest, police say they received reports of a red Ford F350 in multiple locations around the city, where the operator was driving erratically, hitting curbs and traveling the wrong way down the road. Citizens say he was seen at the Weis Market on Old Camp Road, and West Patrick Street. The vehicle had traveled  through a security gate at Security Public Storage at Western Drive in Frederick and left the scene. Damage to the security gate is estimated at $5,000.

Police obtained a license plate number for the truck, and were able to locate the vehicle and Higgins.

Higgins is charged with resisting lawful arrest, failure to obey a lawful order, disturbing the peace, destruction of property, reckless driving, failure to remain at the scene of an accident, and 6 additional motor vehicle charges. Police say additional charges are pending.
