Frederick Shooting Leaves One Man Dead

A fight escalated into the shooting.

FREDERICK, MD (DG)-A late night shooting leaves one man dead and another in custody.

Frederick City Police say they responded to a shooting in 400 block of West South Street shortly after 10 PM on Wednesday night.

Officers found Zachary Winters suffering from a gunshot wound to the upper body. Winters was taken to the hospital and pronounced dead.

Detectives say the incident started as a fight and then escalated. The victim and Richard Harriday had gotten into an argument inside of an apartment. The altercation continued outside where Harriday shot Winters.

Harriday fled the scene to a garage located off of Hoffman’s Alley. He locked himself in the garage for two hours. During this time he spoke with police negotiators.

Harriday peacefully surrendered. He was taken into custody and transported to the police department.

Harriday has been charged with first and second degree murder, handgun use in the commission of a violent crime, and handgun on person.
