Black Bear Killed In Frederick City Watershed

Police looking for the shooter.

Frederick, Md. (DG) – The Maryland Department of Natural Resources is reporting a black bear was shot and killed over the weekend, and now they are looking for who-ever pulled the trigger.

Candy Thomson, spokeswoman with DNR, said the bear was a 7-year-old male who was discovered by a mountain biker on Sunday morning in the Frederick City Watershed along a trail.

“What we had learned so far is that the bear was shot by someone, not very far away, we do not know the caliber of the round that was fired,” Thomson said.

The four-day black bear hunting season in Maryland took place in October and Thomson said that makes this kill illegal.

“This bear was seen by people at the watershed, because on social media people are saying they are upset that the bear was killed for no reason, being left to rot along a trail,” Thomson added.

The black bear was over 430-pounds.

Anyone with information on the bear poacher is asked to call the department’s 24-hour Catch-a-Poacher hotline at 1-800-635-6124.
