Summer Challenge Starts Next Week In Frederick County

It includes a series of free concerts at local libraries.

Frederick, Md (KM). It’s an opportunity for school children, teenagers and adults to read and explore their community. The Frederick County Public Library System is kicking off the Summer Challenge  next Tuesday, May 15th, and continue through August 31st. . “The Summer Challenge will feature a variety of events and programs for all ages to read books, explore their community and win amazing prizes,” says Janet Vogel, the Youth Services Manager for the Library System.

“Our theme, ‘Radio Frederick,’ focuses on music. So expect to see a lot of fun activities and programs around that theme,” she says. “As part of that, we will be hosting a summer-long concert featuring live music across the county.” One of the concerts will feature award-winning musician Laurie Becker on July 21st. Vogel says all concerts are free, but anyone who wants to attend the concert with Laurie Becker needs to obtain tickets.

The Summer Challenge was originally designed for school-aged children, but has been extended to teenagers and adults. Participants can earn points and win prizes, says Vogel

She says kids who take part in the “Summer Challenge” can practice their reading skills, and avoid the “summer slide,” where students lose the academic achievements  they gained during the past year. “Students who have more access to books lose fewer reading skills than those who do not,” says Vogel. “And children who engage in reading and learning over the summer are more likely to return to school at grade level in the fall.”

“Also,  students who participate in the library summer reading programs are proven to have better reading skills at the end of third grade and score higher on standardize tests than students who do not participate,” Vogel adds.

Some activities for school children during the Summer Challenge include animal programs at Catoctin Creek and Fountain Rock Nature Centers, magicians, visits from Keyote and a Frederick Keys player, author events and more. Teenagers who participate can take part in the Equestrian Club, Teen Cuisine, LIfe-Sized games and more. For adults, there are the Freedom Reads series in partnership with Flying Dog Brewery, author events, trivia night and much morel
