Work To Begin Next Week On Resurfacing Rt. 27 In Mt. Airy

There will also be resurfacing on a ramp from northbound Rt. 27 to eastbound I-70.


Mount Airy, Md (KM) The Maryland State Highway Administration is beginning a resurfacing project on the Carroll County side of Mount Airy. Spokesman Charlie Gischlar says the project will cover 2.3-miles of Ridge Road, (Rt. 27) from Watersville Road to the Frederick County line. . “Patching the roadway, the deep surface, and then also milling it, which is removal of the existing top two inches of asphalt, paving, putting down new asphalt, and restriping it,” he says. “That’s going to starting next week, early next week, weather permitting,  of course. And that should take probably a good month and a half to two months to complete.”

SHA says about 20,000 motorists travel that area of Rt. 27 each day, and Gischlar says that’s why the road work will take place during the overnight hours. “After the afternoon rush hour, that 20,000 vehicle is significantly less. It’s probably very directional, meaning about 10,000 one way in the morning, and 10,000 coming home at night. That’s one of the reasons  why we’re doing this at night,” he says.

The crews will be working from 8:00 PM until 5:00 AM, Sundays through Fridays.

The contractor, CJ MIller LLC of Hampstead, is authorized to close a single lane while work is taking place. A flagging operation will be set up to direct motorists through the workzone.

Prior the start of the work on Rt. 27, SHA says crews this week will begin resurfacing the ramp from northbound Rt. 27 (Ridge Road) to eastbound Interstate 70. That project is expected to be completed by mid-August. Officials say there will be night time ramp closures and vehicles will be diverted to South Main Street.

Gischlar says motorists who will be traveling that areas of Mount Airy should  give themselves plenty of time. . “Give us the room we need and we’ll give you a brand new road surface which we won’t have to bother with for 15 or 20 years,” he says.
