Higher Court Upholds Frederick Man’s Child Abuse Conviction

He was found guilty in 2017.

Frederick, Md (KM) Maryland’s second highest court has upheld the conviction of a Frederick man. Demetrius Beynum,  40, was found guilty of 2nd-degree child abuse and 2nd-degree assault following a jury trial on September 14th, 2017. He was sentenced November 14th, 2017 to 15-years in prison with all but 18-months suspended.

A statement from the Frederick County State’s Attorney’s Office says the Court of Special Appeals agreed that the condition requiring Beynum have no contact with the victim under any circumstances was reasonable. The panel also declined to rule on the merits of whether a prosecution witness was improperly allowed to render an expert opinion. And the Court found that there was no abuse of discretion when a defense witness was excluded from testifying. That was not disclosed until the first day of the trial.

Frederick Police began an investigation of the incident on February 18th, 2017 after an 11-year-old child was beaten repeatedly in the head. “This was not a corporal punishment situation,” said State’s Attorney Charlie Smith, in a statement. “This was a terrible assault  on a young child for no good reason. He deserves the year and a half in jail.” .
