Nick Diaz, is the coordinator of the school system’s academic tournament, and said these teams spend 2 months competing against each other during January and February. .FCPS high schools have been competing since 1982. It began as a suggested activity of then Superintendent Dr. Stuart Berger as a way to spike academic thinking. The tournament continues to this day and is happening now according to current tournament Director Nick Diaz who invites the public to attend.

“At Frederick High School in the auditorium at 6:00pm every Friday night in January and February.”

Diaz says the size of the school does not always dictate the strength of a team.

“Brunswick kids, oh my gosh they are so good , Brunswick is incredible. They are in first place right now and they are the only undefeated team. Linganore is very good, Urbana is also excellent , and so is Walkersville, Those are the top four. ”
