Former Treasurer Steals Funds From A Washington County Volunteer Fire Company

The company lost more than $84,000.

 

 

Hagerstown, Md (KM) An investigation of a volunteer fire company in Washington County has found evidence of theft.

According to a news release from Washington County Government, the Division of Emergency Services was contacted on September 24th, 2018, about alleged employee dishonesty and insurance loss claims with the Independent Junior Fire Company, which is one of 26 volunteer fire and rescue companies in Washington County.

The Hagerstown Police Department was also contacted, and began an investigation on September 26th, 2018. As part of its investigation, the agency conducted an audit of the Independent Junior Fire Company.

The Washington County Board of County Commissioners and the Mayor and City Council of Hagerstown were contacted and kept up to date on the investigation.

The Hagerstown Police Department completed its investigation of the Independent Junior Fire Company on January 24th, 2019, and found $84,053.88 in company funds were stolen over a period of nine years. Authorities say the company’s treasurer took the funds, but no charges will be filed as the defendant in this case has passed away. That person’s name was not provided in the news release.

The findings in the case were brought to the Washington County Commissioners on February 12th, 2019. .
