Frederick Man Faces Federal Drug, Weapons Charges

He was arrested early this year.

Frederick, Md (KM) Federal drug and firearms offenses  have been filed against a Frederick man. Lamonte Montae Young, 41, (also known as “Fats”) is charged with possession with intent to distribute controlled substances, possession of a firearm and ammunition by a prohibited person, and possession of a firearm in the furtherance of a drug trafficking crime.

A criminal information was filed against Young on June 12th, 2020. A criminal information is similar to an indictment but without a grand jury.

State’s Attorney Charlie Smith says Frederick Police and the US Homeland Security Investigation began their  investigation into Young in December,2019, in connection with large scale distribution of cocaine.

On February 25th, 2020, law enforcement officers conducting surveillance followed Young into Virginia, where they observed Young engage in what they believed was a drug transaction. Smith says as Young was driving back into Maryland, his vehicle was pulled over. “Based upon that traffic stop, they were able to seize a very significant amount of narcotics: 21 kilos of cocaine, and one-and-a-half kilos of heroin,” he says.

Smith says then police obtained search warrants   on four addresses in Frederick and Hagerstown. “They hit a couple of stash houses, one of which was in Hagerstown. They were able to, at these locations in Frederick and Hagerstown, get an additional 344 grams of heroin,” he says. “That’s where they found the three handguns, one of which was reported stolen. And that’s where they found the $270,000 in cash.”

Smith says the case was transferred to federal prosecutors. “Now we did have charges on Lamonte Young. But we dismissed those charges in light of the federal indictment,” he says.

Federal prosecutors can charge suspects in drug trafficking cases if the operation crosses state lines. Smith also says if Young is convicted, he would be sentenced to many long years in a federal prison.

Young had his initial appearance in US District Court last Friday, July 24th, where he  was ordered held pending a detention hearing this Friday, July 31st.
