Winter Sports Will Return Next Month To Frederick County Public Schools

The Board of Education voted to adopt the Return To Play plan starting in December

Frederick, MD (KB) The Frederick County Board of Education voted to adopt the Return To Play Committee’s recommendation to start the winter sports season next month.

Basketball, swimming, diving, indoor track, wrestling, cheerleading, and unified bocce will all return under this plan.

Practices are set to begin December 7th, 2020, competitions on January 4th, 2021, and the season will end on February 13th, 2021, according to the plan.

Frederick County Public Schools Supervisor of Athletics, Kevin Kendrow, said he’s “excited” about the school sports season.

“We put a lot of time and energy into making these safe plans for December 7th,” said the Athletics Supervisor. “Winter sports are going to look a lot different, but our goal is to potentially, and hopefully, be able to get our student athletes competing.”

Kendrow explained that FCPS will be working with the Frederick County Health Department.

“From the beginning, we’re always going to err on the side of safety,” Kendrow said. “That is why we are in direct collaboration with the Frederick County Health Department.”

The Athletics Supervisor said FCPS is looking into live-streaming options to allow for spectators. He also said that the Return To Play plan still allows for a county championship.

As for fall and spring sports, Kendrow said they will start in February and April, respectively.
