Frederick, Md (KM) Frederick County has begun its budget-drafting process.

Frederick County Executive Jan Gardner held a budget hearing on Monday to receive ideas from the public on what they want to see in a spending plan for fiscal year 2022. :”The budget reflects our shared community values, and where we place our community’s priorities,” she said, “How we spend our limited resources is important to making sure that Frederick County is a great place to live, work and raise a family.”

Gardner also said the property and income tax rates are expected to remain the same for the next fiscal. The property tax rate is $1.06 per $100 of assessed value.

But there are a lot of unknowns regarding the county’s revenue picture. “There’s  uncertainly on how the coronavirus will impact our economy over the upcoming months. So that income tax forecast remains very uncertain,” Gardner said.

And that trend may not end any time soon. “We may also continue to see impacts from the coronavirus on our budget into fiscal year ’23 or later,” she says.

The County Executive says she will hold another hearing on the budget in March. She’s expected to present her proposed spending plan in April. The County Council will hold hearings on the budget and may make some changes. The spending plan  must be adopted by May 31st

Fiscal year 2022 begins on July 1st, 2021.
