Frederick, MD (KB) Work Zone Awareness Week begins next month but spokeswoman for the Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration, Sherry Christian, is reminding drivers to practice safe driving in construction zones now because of a road improvement project on MD 180 that began Monday.

Crews will be milling and patching the stretch of road between US 340 and the MD 17 (Burkittsville Road) roundabout.

Christian urged drivers to stay alert and slow down in construction zones. She said crews will be mindful to motorists.

“They’re going to do what they can to minimize the impact on traffic and on motorists, but also to try to complete the project in time by May,” Christian explained.

Roadwork is expected to take place on weekdays from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., and on some Saturdays.

Christian said the crews are taking advantage of the warm weather to begin work. She also said the warm weather will increase traffic.

“We’re going to have more school buses on the road, we’re going to have more motorists on the road because of the weather improving,” she stated.

Christian noted drivers should look out for reduced speed limits and driving pattern changes. They can expect single-lane closures in the area.

The project is expected to be complete by May.
