Point of Rocks, MD – Moderate flooding is ongoing along the Potomac River at Point of Rocks, Maryland, as the river crested this morning at 23.6 feet, well above the flood stage of 16.0 feet. The National Weather Service has extended its Flood Warning through Friday evening, with river levels expected to gradually fall below flood stage by Friday afternoon.
Floodwaters have already reached key areas, including the comfort stations and upper parking lot at the Point of Rocks boat ramp, and are also affecting similar facilities in Brunswick. Sections of the C&O Canal towpath near both towns are reported to be submerged or hazardous, limiting recreational access.
This event marks the highest crest at Point of Rocks since 1910, when the river reached a nearly identical level.
Local officials are reminding the public not to drive through flooded areas and to avoid bypassing barricades. Most flood-related fatalities occur in vehicles, and even shallow water can pose serious risks.
The National Weather Service will issue the next update at 1:30 PM EDT. Residents in Frederick and Loudoun Counties, as well as nearby areas, are advised to stay informed and follow all safety advisories.
