Frederick, Md (IKM) The Frederick County Health Department says 200 dogs and cats were vaccinated against rabies during a clinic held on Sunday, June 29th in Thurmont.   So far this year, 300 pets have received their rabies shots from the Health Department. .

“Thanks to everyone who braved the heat and brought their dogs and cats out for their vaccination,” says Alicia Evangelista, the Health Department’s Program Manager of community services and development review. “We would also like to thank Dr. Shook with the Linganore Vet Clinic and the two Vet techs that gave their time and expertise in vaccinating pets.”

The Health Department says there have been 11 lab confirmed cases of rabies in 2025 in Frederick County. Last year, there were 34 confirmed cases of rabies locally, mostly in raccoons, skunks, cats, foxes, groundhogs and a cow.

Rabies has a nearly 100-percent mortality rate in animals and humans once they start having symptoms. But it can be prevented in humans by avoiding unvaccinated animals, and getting early treatment when exposed.

The Health Department says it’s crucial for pets to be up-to-date on their rabies vaccinations because they can’t always avoid contacts with wild animals.
