Lawmakers to gather in Annapolis on December 16 following Speaker Adrienne Jones’s resignation.

Annapolis, MD (JK) – Governor Wes Moore has issued an executive order calling for a special session of the Maryland General Assembly to begin Tuesday, December 16, in Annapolis. The session is prompted by the recent resignation of House Speaker Adrienne A. Jones, who announced last week that she would step down after six historic years in the role.
Speaker Jones made history as the first African American and first woman to serve as Maryland’s House Speaker. She has represented Baltimore County’s District 10 for nearly three decades and served as Speaker since 2019, leaving a legacy of accomplishments that touched many aspects of state government.
During the special session, the House of Delegates will elect a new Speaker to succeed Jones. Lawmakers may also address other legislative business that needs resolution before the start of the 2026 regular session, which begins Wednesday, January 14, 2026.
The special session highlights a key leadership transition in the Maryland General Assembly as the state prepares for the upcoming legislative year.
